"This is Part 3 of our coverage of the Computex 2008, Taipei"
AMD Press Conference
AMD held their press conference at the New York New York center. The building is near the Taipei 101 and the old TWTC, it's a mix between a shopping mall, offices and conference rooms. AMD's President, Dirk Meyer and China's Senior VP, Karen Guo were there giving their opening speeches. Later, AMD's VP of notebook division, Chris Cloran gave a presentation on AMD's latest mobile platform.
I must admit after watching the slides, and seeing how excited Chris was ... I was almost sucked into it. Chris was really trying to really push their new mobile platform ... and it seems they've done it with products from Fujistu and HP already scheduled for launch.

Notice the white external box that looks like a portable hard drive. Well, it is infact, an external graphics card. AMD have managed to put a Radeon HD3870 into an external box and you can connect it upto any AMD based notebook that has the external PCI-E v2.0 connector. Yes, that's right extreme gaming performance for notebook users. It has its only cooling, power supply and memory ... and yes, it's designed and made by Fujitsu.
Apparently, the graphics performance on their standard mobile platform using the 780GM chipset is 2-3 times better than any Intel's offerings. And you if add this external graphics box ... the gaming performance is phenominal.
It's taken a while for AMD to get its act together, but they're still behind in many areas. Well, there's a long way to go ... but at least they've done something interesting for Computex 2008. I expect some new and exciting developements later this year in the desktop CPU, GPU and chipset department.
