Installation and BIOS Settings

Installation

The Kingston HyperX 1Gb kit comes in the form of 2 x 512Mb modules ... which is ideal for dual channel memory mode. For a gaming/performance system ... nothing works better than a matched pair of memory modules.

Installation was fairly straight forward. No problems here. Needless to say ... just make sure you don't  insert the modules the wrong way round. During our tests we used the Asus P5ND2-SLI motherboard, the DIMM slots are colour coded for easy installation of the memory modules ... thus enabling dual channel memory mode. I presume a majority of motherboards now have this.

The next step is to adjust the BIOS settings for memory timings and voltage.

BIOS Settings

This part is very important. Running the memory at the wrong timings, speed  and voltage can damage your memory modules and also reduce the performance of your whole system.

If you are unsure what divider to use or what memory timings to set ... it is best that you leave all memory settings to DEFAULT or AUTO.

Voltage adjustments are needed for overclocking ... again if you do not plan to overclock, I recommend that you leave this setting alone.

spd

Using CPU-Z's SPD timings table, you can see that memory timings by default @ 400Mhz (5-5-5-16). However, these modules are low latency spec rated at 4-4-4-12. These settings can be manually adjusted via the BIOS (see above).
