Abit releases a true enthuisast's board ... with good performance and overclocking abilities

INTRODUCTION

The AN9-32X Fatal1ty is Abit's flagship AM2 motherboard, and I can tell you it's really something. It utilises the Nvidia 590 SLI chipset, and supports EPP memory as well as active heatpipe cooling (with twin fans). The AN9-32X Fatal1ty is part of Abit's new Fatal1ty range of motherboards, and it's the first of its kind that we've tested. These boards have become very popular among gamers and enthusiasts, and one of the reasons is because they been endorsed, tested and approved by fivefold professional world champion Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel. These motherboard are really designed for the enthusiasts, with only one thing in mind ... performance..

We've already reviewed the KN9 SLI motherboard from Abit, which uses the 570 SLI chipset ... it's Nvidia's second chipset for the AM2 processors. It was a good performer, and is aimed at the mainstream/performance market. That's all good, but Abit, like all good manufacturers, just couldn't resist and now they've released their high-end enthusiast motherboard.

Being Abit's flagship AM2 motherboard, it not only looks good from the packaging point of view, but it also offers great features such as their silent OTES™ GT active heatpipe cooling with twin fans. The board uses solid 100% Japanese capacitors around the processor socket, which helps stability and prolong the lifespan. Better still, you still get to use their innovative and easy to use uGuru overclocking utility in the BIOS.

All of this sounds great ... but I fear that AM2 motherboards could be short lived. Sadly, I have to say, that current AM2 setups just can not compete with Intel. Intel's Core 2 Duo and Conroe processors have stole the headlines in recent months, and their matching i975X and P965 motherboards are really making life hard for AMD and AM2 motherboards based on Nvidia chipsets.

Until AMD releases their 65nm processors or their 4x4 technology, we will have to be content with what they have now. If you're an AMD fan, there's still some hope. Several manufacturers are soon releasing new motherboards using ATI's RD600 chipset ... could this be a lifeline? We'll have to wait and see ...

OK, let's not wast any more time, and see how well the Abit AN9 32X Fatal1ty performs against other AM2 motherboards.
