Introduction

Adata's Vitesta DDR2-800+ Extreme Edition proves to be a very good performer

Introduction

Adata was established in may 2001 and founded by Mr Simon Chen. They specialise in RAM modules but later expands to flash modules and multimedia peripherals. Adata have made it's name by winning many of the most recognized international awards which including the National Silver Award of Excellence in Taiwan, Japan G-MARK (Good Design Award), CES Innovations Award in the US and iF Design award and reddot design award in Germany.

Adata have made US$795 million in revenue for 2004 to US$973 million in 2005.Being the second largest DRAM memory provider in the world and Taiwan fourteenth top global brand in 2006. Not bad in just 5 years.. So you can see, Adata is continuing to capture key markets. First in Asia, then in the US, and now Europe.

We're starting to see a lot more Adata memory modules now available in the UK through various retailers. One of the reasons could be actual cost (the come-in price) as retailers need to make a very small, but sufficient profit. A typical Adata memory module would cost significantly less than bigger bands like Corsair, Crucial or OCZ.

In this review we'll be taking a look at the Adata Vitesta DDR2-800+ Extreme Edition 2Gb kit. These modules are rated at PC2-6400 that's DDR2-800 (400Mhz) with memory timings of 4-4-4-12. They're aimed at the mainstream market and should be pretty compatible with the majority of motherboards out there.

When I first heard about DDR2 memory, I was pretty confused how they class and labelled them. OK, I'll try and give you some DDR2 terminology ... More information can be found HERE

  • PC2-4200 : DDR2-533 : 133FSB : 266Mhz
  • PC2-5300 : DDR2-667 : 166FSB : 333Mhz
  • PC2-6400 : DDR2-800 : 200FSB : 400Mhz
  • PC2-8000 : DDR2-1000 : 250FSB : 500Mhz
  • PC2-8500 : DDR2-1066 : 266FSB : 533Mhz
  • PC2-9200 : DDR2-1133: 283FSB : 566Mhz **
  • PC2-10000 : DDR2-1200 : 300FSB : 600Mhz **
  • ** Unofficial DDR2 specifications

I did some research on what types of memory chips (ICs) these Adata modules use. I found out that these particular modules came from a batch that used the much talked about Micron D9 ICs. If that's true, then we expect these Adata modules to compete very well against other big brands like Corsair.

Anyway, enough talk ... let's take a closer look at the specifications ...
