Introduction

Xigmatek introduces a wide range of products that will attract the both mainstream users and enthusiasts ... their 1000W PSU is quite something!

INTRODUCTION

Xigmatek is a German based company that specialise in thermal products for PCs, manufacturing products such as heatsink & fans, CPU coolers and power supplies. They were  established in 2005 and have been building a name for themselves over the past year or so. Here's a little blurb taken from their website.

"XIGMATEK Co., Ltd. was established in 2005 with the aim of becoming one of the world leaders in the Thermal field. In XIGMATEK, the major members of management have many years experience in Thermal industry, PC, manufacturing and other applications. With our fruitful experience, we have full confidence that we can provide not only the best, reliable, environmental and performing Thermal/Cooling systems but excellent service also to fulfill global user’s demand."

During our coverage of the Cebit 2008 exhibition, we saw a lot of manufacturers like Coolermaster, Enermax and Thermaltake displaying their new range of power supplies. Some of these power supplit units had power ratings upto 1500W ... yes, that's right 1.5Kw !! It's unbelieveable how much power a high-end system or an enthusiast gaming rig needs these days. Especially if you have a system with a quad core processor, quad GPUs graphics, a couple of rom drives, and several SATA hard drives in a Raid setup. And if you're a watercooling enthusiast ... you'll definitely need more power to power the pumps, the fans on the radiators and the optional 5.25" monitoring units. Mind you, not all of the power is used ... just what the system needs. Still, it's an astonishing figure.

In this review our CPU3D review team takes a look at the Xigmatek NRP-HC1001 power supply. This PSU has a modular cable management system, it's certified SLI ready and features four +12V rails (2@20A and 2@36A). It produces a maximum power output of 1000W with peak efficiency of 80%. It's build quailty seems to be very good, and it should compete very well against the likes of Thermaltake, Coolermaster and PC Power & cooling.

The modular cable management system is a great feature. It allows users to only use their own configuration of power cables and connectors as required. Less cables means more room, and more room means for better air flow. We'll be testing this power supply on our power hungry HydroBox III system, which I've installed a massive 240w Peltier TEC. It's the same system we used for testing all our other power supplies. We'll check the stability and actual power consumption of this PSU under full load. Here, have a look at the component list below.

 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (B3) Processor overclocked @ 3.6Ghz
 - Asus P5E3 Deluxe Motherboard
 - OCZ DDR3-1800 PC3-14400 2Gb Kit
 - 2 x Powercolor HD3870 OC 512Mb DDR4 (in Crossfire mode)
 - 1 x 120Gb Maxtor 7,200rpm HDD
 - 1 x 250Gb Western Digitial 7,200rpm HDD
 - 2 x Sony x18 DVD-RW /DL Writer
 - Alphacool LCD Display panel
 - Scythe Multi-Monitor front panel
 - OCLabs 12V Pump
 - Swiftech Apogee GTX
 - Custom watercooling with 240W Peltier TEC
 - 4 x 120mm exhaust fans

So as you can see from the above list ... it's a pretty beefy system with lots of components using up power. The specifications of the Ximgatek NRP-HC1001 certainly looks very impressive, but will it perform as good as the big brands?

OK, let's not waste any more time and take a closer look at the Xigmatek NRP-HC10001 PSU...
