Enthusiasts rejoice ... Kingston's HyperX DDR3-1800 PC3-14400 2Gb kit is just what you've been waiting for.

Introduction

Kingston Technology have always been one of the pioneers in memory technology. Ever since I was a child, I remember using Kingston ram in one of my earliest PCs. Over the years we've been through several memory technologies including EDO, SDRAM, DDR and DDR2. Move time forward and we're now seeing new memory technologies like DDR3 and even DDR4, with DDR5 on the horizon. Currently DDR3 ram is the fastest available memory for desktop PCs. But unfortunately, due to production costs and marginal performance gains over DDR2 ... DDR3 hasn't been well received among users both mainstream and enthusiast.

I'm still not sure why DDR3 is still that expensive. It's been over a year since it's introduction. You would think that the price would come down ... but it hasn't. One has to think ... is there a price fixing ring going on here? If the prices of DDR3 ram remain fairly high, it might affect future developements of new technology.

But you know as well as I do, Kingston Technology ain't going to stand there and let the market forces dictate its future. With such a huge infrastructure behind them, they can afford to further develope new technologies and improve existing ones. And to prove this case ... they've just announced and released their highest performing DDR3 modules in the form of the HyperX DDR3-1800 PC3-14400.

Kingston's HyperX series of memory modules are aimed at the high-end and enthusiast market. So, with this in mind, you get a little extra for your money. These modules will feature higher quality memory ICs, a nice looking heat spreader and higher voltage tolerance for better overclocking.

The labelling and classification of DDR3 memory can be a little confusing at times, but I'll try and give you some DDR3 terminology ... More information can be found HERE

In this review, our CPU3D review team will be taking a look at the Kingston HyperX DDR3-1800 PC3-14400 2Gb kit. These modules are rated at DDR3-1800 and can run at 900Mhz (1800Mhz) with memory timings of 8-8-8-24. We expect these modules to perform and compete very well against others on the market, especially OCZ's DDR3-1800 PC3-14400 modules. what's more interesting, is how well they will overclock? Can they reach that magical 2Ghz barrier? (Which is quite an achievement by the way).

In our tests we'll bee installing these modules on an Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard which supports DDR3 ram, along with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor and a Radeon HD3870, running Windows Vista. During the tests, we'll also see how well they can overclock.

OK, let's not waste any more time and take a closer look at the Kingston HyperX DDR3-1800 PC3-14400 2Gb kit ...
