" ... In my opinion, the PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 860W PSU is one of the best sub-1000W power supply we've tested to date. It proved it that it can handle the most demanding of components including our HydroBox III system."

Producing rock solid power supplies is what PC Power & Cooling knows best ... The Turbo Cool 860W is one hell of a PSU.

INTRODUCTION

If you don't know already ... PC Power & Cooling is now part of the OCZ Technology Group. They join the OCZ Technology Group during the middle of 2007 and since then, their relationship have flourished into a very successful partnership. We can expect to see a lot more from PC Power & Cooling over the coming months, especially their new ESA certified power supplies. The power supplies from PC Power & Cooling is fast becoming the choice of the enthusiasts. I mean who could argue, especially when their PSUs have the lowest failure rate in the industry. And they're all covered by their very strong warranty program. Here's a little blurb taken from PC Power & Cooling's website ...

PC Power & Cooling

"On April 19,1985, PC Power & Cooling began operations in a small warehouse just outside of San Diego, CA. Founded by Doug Dodson, a commodity trader and electronic hobbyist, the company's first products were custom fans to cool and quiet computers. In 1986, the company introduced its Silencer 150 and Turbo-Cool 200, the industry's first ultra-quiet and high-performance power supplies. Other high-end products followed, the reviews were great, and the company continued to grow. In 1991, the company moved to a modern facility in Carlsbad, CA.

Over the last 22 years, PC Power & Cooling has produced many innovative products including: the first CPU cooler, the first PC heat alarm, the first independently-regulated PC power supply, the first redundant power system, the first NVIDIA-certified SLI supply, the first One Kilowatt computer power supply, and the first power supply with its own certified test report (Turbo-Cool 1KW)."

A few months ago we reviewed the PC Power & Cooling / OCZ Silencer 750W Quad PSU, which won numerous awards worldwide. It was a vey nice power supply with a good +12V rail and offered excellent stability. The PSU was quiet, powerful and solid. Our CPU3D review team really like it.

In this review, we'll be taking a look at the Turbo Cool 860W PSU from PC Power & Cooling. This power supply is the latest addition to PC Power & Cooling's range in the "Turbo Cool" series. It's Nvidia SLI-certified, and is aimed at high-end users and enthusiasts who's after performance and rock solid stability. The PSU is encased in a black chassis, and uses only one 80mm exhaust fan. It's certified Nvidia SLI-ready supporting dual Geforce 8800GTX, and it features mesh cabling rather than a modular cabling system. Other features include a powerful single 12V rail @ 64A ... yes, that's right ... 64A. This should be more than enough to power even the most demanding of components.

There are pros and cons for having a single +12V rail. But PC Power & Cooling believes that spliting the +12V line to 2, 4 or 6 rails, actually reduce performance and cause overcurrent shutdowns. Well, I always tell myself ... listen to the experts. They can't be wrong.

According to the specs, the PSU can handle 860 watts of continuous power with a peak output of 930W ... it sounds very impressive, and I believe it too. You can be sure that only high quality components are used in this PSU, and you can feel the quality right away, especially when you have it in your hands. The PSU only has one 80mm exhaust fan, which I find quite odd, as one would expect to have an extra 120mm fan on the underside for extra cooling or air-flow. This in itself, is proof of its high standard in energy efficiency. High quality components will give high enery efficiency, and thus produce less heat.

The only thing I dislike about this PSU ... is the cables. It's a massive sprawl of meshed cabling that can be quite ugly. Personally, I prefer a modular cable management system.

OK, let's not waste any more time and take a closer look at the PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 860W PSU...
