Samsung's SyncMaster 245B LCD Monitor has everything ... Stunning visual quality, great looks and features.

 

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to LCD monitors and TVs, Samsung are known to be among the best in the World. They are synonymous with quality, looks and great features. My colleagues all use Samsung LCD monitors and in fact, we have 2 in the office ... although they are 22" models. Still, the quality and features are great, and this is true throughout their range of LCD monitors. So, when we got the chance to take a look at the Samsung SynMaster 245B LCD monitor ... I jumped at the chance.

So what's so different with the Samsung SynMaster 245B? Well, for a start it's a 24" model. Yes, that extra 2 inches isn't all that much extra ... but it terms of resolution, the 245B can give you a maximum of 1920x1200, as opposed to their 22" model which has a maximum of 1680x1050. For gaming enthusiasts who's love widescreen gaming at the highest resolution ... the Samsung SynMaster 245B could be answer.

 

 

One of the major concerns for many consumers when deciding over a LCD monitor ... is cost. Although LCD panels over the past 2-3 years have dropped considerably ... it's still a considerable amount, possibly 1/4 of the

price of a complete system. For most mainstream user, going for a 19" - 22" LCD monitor would probably be best and most affordable choice ... a 24" model is a little bit of an overkill. However, convincing a hardcore gaming enthusiast otherwise, won't be easy.

High-Res Gaming is not the only use for a large 24" LCD monitor. More than ever, consumers are now using their monitors as TVs ... to play their latest DVDs and Bluray films. For me and the rest of the team, a large 24" LCD monitor is considered good enough to produce a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 for benchmarking. Yup, benchmarking ... that's what will be using the Samsung SyncMaster 245B purely for ...

I must admit, there is nothing better than to run a game on a PC at the highest resolution possible with all the advanced graphic features enabled. Just imagine running Crysis on resolution of 1920x1200, with all the details on high, running x8 AA and x16 AF ... it is truely a sight to savour. So, there's no argument ... a large monitor is definitely needed if you're a hardcore gaming enthusiast with a demanding appetite for visual gaming experience.

 

 

Closer Look

The actually package and box is larger than I expected, but then again it is one of Samsung's larger LCD monitor in their SyncMaster series ... so a big box to saftely house their big monitor. Our 24" Samsung SynMaster 245B LCD monitor was ordered on http://www.ebuyer.com/ and on closer examination, we found that our monitor was actually made in Slovakia. Nothing wrong with that ... in fact nowadays, you'll find the majority of LCD and TV manufacturers will have at least one of their factories in Eastern Europe. The strange thing is that this model isn't actually listed on Samsung's official website. The closest model to this one, is the Samsung SynMaster SM245B+, which I sure is very similar.  

 

 

In this review, we'll be taking a look at the Samsung SyncMaster 245B LCD Monitor. It boasts a massive 24" inch screen, with maximum resolution of 1920x1200. It features a quick response time of 5ms, supports HDCP and has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, with a brightness level of 400cd/m². For extras it's bundled with a detachable speaker module with stereo sound. The LCD itself screen uses TFT active matrix technology with a 0.27mm dot ditch, and it's commonly found on most other LCD monitors on the market. But what makes the Samsung different is the stunning visual quality it offers ...

We'll be testing the Samsung SynMaster 245B on our test rig ... which is comprised of a Gigabyte GA-EP45 DS5 motherboard with our trusted old Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ default 2.4Ghz, Kingston HyperX DDR2 PC2-9200 2Gb Kit, a Radeon HD3870 512MB DDR4, PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 860W PSU, running Windows Vista with native DX10.
